Scottsdale was founded in 1868 and the city got its name in 1894. It was finally incorporated in 1951. Over the next decades, Scottsdale, along with Phoenix, grew toward the end of the century, continuing into the middle 2000′s. It is now home to almost 250,000 residents and is the sixth largest city in Arizona. The city has blossomed into a premier tourist destination. Along with Phoenix, Scottsdale is vulnerable to intense heat during the summer months, and very cold nights during the winter. Temperatures in June can hit over 120 degrees while night-time lows can reach 20 degrees in the winter. Scottsdale is located in the northern regions of the Sonoran Desert. It includes a beautiful mountain landscape with the nearby McDowell Mountains. The geography of the city itself is split into four areas. Old Town, North Scottsdale, Shea Corridor, and South Scottsdale. Much growth has occurred in North Scottsdale and it is now home to some of the cities’ most expensive homes. The most frequent activities at these resorts is golf and spa treatments. There is a growing and vibrant nightlife that is equally high end. Many of the restaurants, shops, bars, clubs and galleries attract wealthy business people, athletes and other celebrities. In addition to tourism, healthcare is a major employer. Scottsdale Healthcare and the Mayo Clinic are responsible for almost 12,000 jobs in the area. CVS Caremark, GoDaddy, General Dynamics, Troon Golf and The Vanguard Group also have a big presence in the city.
Scottsdale is also home to a decent arts culture. The city has an annual arts festival which is renown across the nation. In fact, Frank Lloy Wright enjoyed a winter residence in Scottsdale from 1937 to 1959 and his home, the Taliesin West, is a very popular attraction.
