Miramar city is located in San Diego County, California. The city is both residential and commercial. It is also largely based around the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar. This is how the city developed its self-proclaimed nickname, “Fightertown USA”.

Major Aerial Combat Area
The Marine Corps Air Station was realigned by the Base Realignment and Closure Program in 1995. In 1996, it was reassigned as a Marine Corps Station for fixing plane wings and a base for helicopter landings.
The air station is the site of the infamous Top Gun School, of which the official name is the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. This school trains pilots in aerial fighting in fleet aircrews using “dissimilar air combat” training concepts. The SFTI program was established in 1969.
Top Gun School
California Magazine published an article by Ehud Yonay called “Top Guns” that was about the aviation fighting school, and the screenplay for the movie Top Gun was based off of the article. Top Gun was released in 1986 and was directed by Tony Scott. It was produced by Paramount Pictures. The shooting probably involved quite a few storage container rentals in Miramar. The movie starred Tom Cruise. The movie was filmed mostly on location at the Miramar Air Base and the director paid for any extra use of the planes for specific cinematic shots.
Every year the Miramar Air Base hosts the Miramar Air Show for the community. The Miramar Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum recently opened and is the only museum dedicated to Marine Corps Aviation. The museum has tours Tuesday through Sunday and features state of the art facilities.
More Military
Although the Air Base is a central component of the city, it is not the only component. Miramar has a large market for manufacturing and distribution. This is why many shipping containers make their way to the city. Miramar also has many commercial and retail businesses on its main streets, and a variety of office and warehouse spaces available. The city has ideal real estate because of its central location; it is in close proximity to many different places in San Diego and the general Southern California area.
Miramar was originally part of the Scripps Ranch Area. Edward W. Scripps built Miramar Mansion in 1890, which was the start of the area’s development. The area really started developing after the military arrived in 1950, and now the city has one of the highest occupancy rates in the country. Portable storage containers helped support the population growth and real estate development.
