It only takes a quick 20- minute drive West through Tempe to reach Phoenix, Arizona’s capitol, from Mesa. Mesa is also conveniently located 12 miles East of Sky Harbor International Airport. Along with the surrounding areas, Mesa has seen considerable growth over the years with real estate and community development. The increase in real estate translated into an increased demand for storage container rental services in Mesa AZ. Storage containers were being used as portable storage for commercial and residential real estate development. Mesa has many other worthwhile attractions including the Mesa Arts Center, the Arizona Museum of Natural History, and the Park of the Canals. The large suburban population of Mesa enjoys many city parks, shopping centers, restaurants, golf courses, and public pools.
Mesa was founded in 1878, and at that time, was inhibited by two separate Mormon groups from both Utah and Idaho. The first group, led by Daniel Webster Jones, settled in the Northern part of modern day Mesa. Robson, Sirrine, Pomeroy and Crimson were the leaders of the second Mormon group, and they immigrated to the actual Mesa formation that the city is named after.
Well before the Mormon groups settled in Mesa, the Hohokam people lived and farmed in the Mesa area. They were a successful agricultural community because of the extensive canal system that they built using basic digging tools. Their ability to produce an abundance of maize, cotton, squash, beans and tobacco in the extremely arid climate does not match up with the meaning of their name- “Hohokam” translates to “all used up”. The Hohokam canals connected areas of desert as large as 110,000 acres. The same canal systems that allowed the Hohokam people to be so successful in agriculture were incorporated into the canals built by the second founding group of Mormon’s, and are still in use today.
Visitors can learn more about the rich history of Mesa at the Mesa Historical Museum, located on Horne Road, just south of the Red Mountain Freeway. The museum contains Hohokam agricultural tools and a replica of an Adobe schoolhouse. The Hohokam’s presence is also represented in sports with Mesa’s Hohokam baseball stadium, which is the Cub’s home for spring training. The Cubs began spring training in Mesa in 1952, and set a major league record for spring training attendance in 2004, with 189, 692 fans filling the stands.
