Downtown San Diego is the center of the prosperous San Diego County, and it is located in San Diego Bay. Downtown is a mosaic of different districts, each with their own character. Downtown has not always been built up and has seen a renaissance in the last few years. We provide portable storage container rentals in Downtown San Diego from our nearby location in Spring Valley.
The Core district is where most of the business happens in Downtown San Diego and it is located in the heart of the city and made up of many business buildings. Just to the East of the Core is East Village, which has recently transformed into the largest district of Downtown San Diego. Redevelopment of this district took off in the 1990′s, just after artists and other new residents started inhabiting the area. At this time there was a demand for portable storage containers to support the construction. The opening of PETCO Park in 2004 helped to sustain the momentum of this development; vacant lots and run down warehouses were development into studio apartments and galleries.
In the Northwest area of downtown lays Little Italy, a district devoted to everything Italian. Numerous Italian restaurants, galleries, and shops line India St., where visitors can amble through and view the district’s homage to the early Italian fisherman who lived in the hills in the early 20th century. Every Saturday the Little Italy Mercado offers fresh fish, produce and other market goods. Numerous annual events are held in Little Italy. The Venetian mask event is held the week before Mardi gras. In April there is an ArtWalk, which attracts 120,000 people to view and purchase art in the district. The Gran Fondo Colnago bicycle race starts in Little Italy. In the spring visitors can get a taste of all of the fabulous restaurants in the area at the Taste of Little Italy. The buildings of Little Italy have been recently renovated and you could find shipping containers nearby for the development. These buildings still contain the essence of grand antique buildings.
The Columbia district contains residential high rises, as well as commercial buildings, and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the West. Public transportation is offered in the Columbia District, including the Trolley, Coaster, and the Pacific Surfliner. The Columbia district is currently under renovation and there are many portable storage units in the area. In 2007 at least 5 of the high rise buildings started construction. In 1997 the North Embarcadero Envisionary Plan was proposed, but it is still undergoing revisions. The goal is to build a new cruise ship terminal, and new hotels.
The Marina district is located just South of the Columbia district, and it contains the tourist attraction, Seaport Village, as well as the San Diego Convention Center. This district has also recently experienced a transformation from vacant warehouses to condominiums and retail. Horton Plaza district is centered on retail, with the Westfield Horton Plaza mall, which brought success to the area. Before the mall opened in 1985, the area was an empty field and the main residence of the Homeless population of San Diego.
The Gaslamp district is on the National Register of Historic Places,
and is a lively, exciting portion of Downtown San Diego. Alonzo Horton was responsible for the development of this area in the 1860′s. The area was renovated in the 1980′s, along with most of San Diego Downtown. Now the districts hosts many events including Mardi Gras, Street Scene Music Festival, St. Patrick’s Day festivities, and events surrounding the baseball games at PETCO Park.
