We want to profile Chino California and highlight storage containers in Chino. The city of Chino is located in the San Bernardino, County. This county is part of the Inland Empire, which is a metropolitan area of Southern California, and associated with the Los Angeles Area. Chino is 21 square miles, and is bordered on the West side by Chino Hills.
The first people to live in the area that is modern day Chino were the Tongva people, who created the Wapijangna settlement. This settlement was located in the Santa Ana River Watershed. The land of Chino was in the hands of the Spanish government until Mexico became independent of Spain in the first half of the 19th century. Chino was a prominent area reguarding the California Gold Rush, and mining for gold and coal took place there. In the last 20 years, Chino has enjoyed considerable economic, population, and development growth. With this comes a strong demand for shipping containers and the like. Real estate developers and construction companies relied on portable storage container rentals to support their projects.
In 1910 Chino became an official city. Chino became more suburban and less agriculture in the 1970’s. Today the population is above 82,000. Along with the surrounding areas, Chino has seen rapid growth in population and development. Real estate values have increased along with building, and that has caused a demand for portable storage units in Chino. The majority of the population (51.8%) is Hispanic or Latino. 26.7% of the population is Caucasian, 13% of the population is Asian, and 3.5% of the population is African American.
The Chino Government has instated programs such as “Green Chino” and “Healthy Chino” to benefit the community. The Green Chino program offers recycling, water reservation and restoration, storm water pollution prevention, and environmentally friendly construction methods. Chino is committed to reduce carbon emissions in order to fight global warming. The city of Chino is taking part in the Green Valley Initiative of San Bernardino County. Other cities that make up this initiative are: Loma, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Yucca Valley, Redlands, and Rialto. Chino recently purchased a new sewer truck that runs on natural gas, this purchase was made possible by Clean Transportation funding.
A sub-section of Chino’s waste management program is SHARPS: a system created to dispose of needles safely in order to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and other diseases that are spread through used needles and syringes.
The Healthy Chino Coalition was organized in 2004 in response to rising obesity rates. This Coalition organizes events such as “Chino Walks” which is a club in which members meet once a month to go on a fitness walk. Other programs perks include a healthy foods farmers market, and family fitness day.
