San Leandro is in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. San Leandro was first known for its delicious cherries and the city still holds an annual cherry festival. Charming neighborhoods make San Leandro a pleasant residential city.
The city is also known for its food processing operations and lighter manufacturing businesses which are home to a few portable storage containers. Well- known companies such as The North Face, Ghirardelli, JanSport, Otis Spunkmeyer, and Coca- Cola have headquarters in San Leandro.
Transportation and Transit
Many freeways are accessible by San Leandro residents including the Interstate 880, 580, and 238. The Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) serves the city at two locations: San Leandro station and Bayfair station. The construction of the BART system required many units and other construction materials. AC transit is a bus service that includes the area of San Leandro in its routes. There are plans to develop a ferry system that would connect San Leandro’s marina to Downtown San Francisco.
San Leandro High School is the major high school in the area. The school has recently been expanded to include new wings to accommodate the growing number of students.
Major Malls
There are four major malls in San Leandro. The Bayfair Center is one of the earliest malls to open in the area. The mall opened in 1957 before container rentals became readily available. In 1980, it was expanded to include a large Macy’s. The mall was remodeled in 2003 when it was sold to Madison Marquette. The Westgate Center is another mall in the area and it is a 10-mile long strip mall. The Westgate Center includes larger freestanding stores including Costco and Home Depot. Two other shopping malls in San Leandro include the Greenhouse Shopping Center and the Marina Square Center.
The San Leandro Shoreline Recreation Area is a popular destination in the city. The area is home to the San Leandro Marina. The Marina contains 455 berths along with two yacht clubs and a boat ramp. There are restaurants, a waterfront hotel, a golf course, a shoreline hiking trail, and picnic areas along the marina.
