Brief History

A sheep rancher, Robert Allison, first settled the area of Lemon Grove in 1869. The area became known for lemon and citrus cultivation after 1900. In 1977 the area was incorporated as a city, and now 26,000 people inhabit the established neighborhoods of Lemon Grove.

The “World’s Biggest Lemon” is located at 3361 Main Street, Lemon Grove. The lemon statue is 10 feet wide and bears the phrase: “Best Climate On Earth”. Lemon Grove does have a spectacular climate; it is warm and sunny with a cool ocean breeze blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. The elevation ranges from 280 to 530 feet.
Much of Lemon Grove was developed by the 1970’s, but today The Lemon Grove Community Development Agency is still working hard to make affordable housing available. Hillside Terrace senior community opened in 1986, Citron Court housing community opened in 2009, and Citronica complexes are planned and waiting for further funding. Once funding is received, storage container rental units will be deployed to the area to support building.

Focusing on Community

The Community Center of Lemon Grove, located on School Lane, can be rented out for events. The center is in the heart of the city, and holds 100 guests in the theatre and 75 guests in the banquet room. The center building also features a full kitchen.

There is also a current plan for further redevelopment of the Lemon Grove Downtown area. The city officials want to encourage mixed-use development, more parking, new street configuration, and more commercial and residential space. These efforts will require storage storage services and a variety of other construction materials. The government of Lemon Grove sees these changes happening over a ten to fifteen year period.

Preserving History

The Lemon Grove Historical Society operates the beautiful and historic H. Lee House. The house can also be rented out for any resident’s events. The courtyard of the H. Lee house features a beautiful gazebo and intricate brickwork. Lemon Grove has many well-kept parks, including Lemon Grove Park, Berry Street Park, and Firefighter Park. Firefighter features a new skate park, the “Skate Spot”. The Lemon Grove Library building is located on Broadway Street.
