Population Growth
Escondido grew in population during the 1880’s “Southern California Land Boom” that brought many more settlers to the area. The area was sold to the Escondido Company in 1884 and Escondido was incorporated in 1888. The 1880’s brought transportation to the area with the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroads. Escondido had an agricultural based economy up until the 1970’s. The city was known for growing citrus, olives and avocados.
Today Escondido’s economy is comprised of a wide variety of jobs and services. Residents hold jobs in health care, education, retail, scientific, and other professional areas. The top employer in Escondido is the Palomar Medical Center. The medical center opened in 1950 and the additional McLeod Tower was built in 1974. Future plans of development involve the new Palomar Medical Center West that is located at the Escondido Research and Technology Center. The PMC West has 653 beds and would serve as the new acute-care hospital. This hospital will open in 2012.
New Action and Activity
The activity in Escondido’s Downtown has picked up within the last decade. There are many new restaurants, galleries, shops and cafes to visit on Central Grand Ave. The Mingei International Museum just opened in the Downtown area. This museum holds artesian works from around the globe. Grape Day Park is also in the Downtown Area. There is always a chance of finding active portable storage containers in this area. The Civic Center and the California Center for the Arts are located in Grape Day Park. The center for the arts has a conference center a museum and two theatres.
A new stadium will be built in Escondido starting in 2012. The city of Escondido voted to build this stadium after the AAA Portland Beavers was sold to Jeff Moorad, owner of the San Diego Padres.
