Tempe is located in the metropolitan Phoenix area, on the Eastern side. Scottsdale is to the North of Tempe and Chandler is to the South. Arizona State University is located in Tempe. The campus is home to many portable storage containers that are used for equipment, materials and other applications. Tempe is the most densely populated city in Arizona and has a prosperous economy. Many major companies operate from Tempe including: US Airways, Circle K, America West Airlines, Mobile Mini, and Limelight Networks. Cold Stone Creamery began in Tempe and its first location is still operating today.
The Arizona Mills Mall is a large indoor outlet mall that attracts many visitors on a daily basis. The mall opened in 1997 with 200 stores and many unitsfor building support. Three popular destinations in the mall are the Imax theatre, The Rainforest Café restaurant, and the Burlington Coat Factory. Another popular mall in Tempe is the Tempe Market Place. This mall was opened in 2007 on a 130-acre plot of land. The two major sections of the Marketplace consist of the outer circle large-scale stores and the inner circle. The inner circle is called “The District” and holds smaller scale retail stores and pedestrian walk ways.
Tempe has two major centers for the arts. The Gammage Auditorium was built in 1962 and was the last public commission of Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1985 the Gammage Auditorium was added to the national register of historic places. The auditorium is located at the intersection of Mills Ave. and Apache Boulevard and is on the campus of Arizona State University. The building is round and has many rounded archways and its proscenium stage holds an audience of over 3,000 people.
The Tempe Center for the Arts opened in 2007. Again, construction involved many container rentals and most have been removed from the site. It was built out of funds from taxes and it is publicly owned. Many city performing groups call this theatre home including Tempe Little Theatre, A Ludwig Dance Theatre, Tempe Symphony Orchestra, and Desert Dance Theatre.
The Tempe Town Lake is a major destination in Tempe. The basin is naturally made from the Salt River and the lake was artificially made with rubber stoppers in 1999. Now the lake is the host to countless activities and events. Residents can enjoy fishing, boating and kayaking on the lake, and biking and walking along the park that surrounds the lake. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Block Party is hosted every New Year’s Eve on the lake. The annual iron man competition is held on the lake in November. The Tempe Music Festival is just one of the many festivals held around the lake every year.
